New national progressive numbering of civil status records

The Decree of the Central Directorate for Demographic Services dated 19/07/2023 stipulates that the birth act number printed in area 21 on the back of the electronic identity card can, in addition to the previously established format, also assume the following format for digital civil status records: a numerical string divided by three separators consisting of hyphens “-“.

This provision aims to incorporate the stipulations of Annex 3, point A.2.1 (*), of the Ministerial Decree of 18 October 2022 regarding the assignment of progressive numbering (unique national identifier) to digital civil status records, formatted through the ANSC services.

(*) M.D. 18/10/2022, Annex 3, Point A.2.1

“Assignment of progressive numbering (unique national identifier) The service allows for the unique identification of each civil status record through a progressive numbering (unique national identifier) composed of the reference year, a national progressive number of the civil status record, a progressive number referring to the municipality that created it, and the ISTAT code identifying the municipality itself [e.g., 2022-1002-10-043023].”
