Release and renew minors

The Electronic Identity Card (CIE) is an identification document that can be issued to minor Italian citizens from birth.

The Electronic Identity Card is an identification document that can be issued to Italian citizens aged under 18 from birth. Minors can apply for the document valid for expatriation if both parents are present at the time of issuing the CIE.

The CIE validity is:

  • 3 years for minors up to the age of 3;
  • 5 years for minors aged between 3 and 18.

From the age of 12 onwards, two fingerprints of the minor are collected and he/she will have to sign the document.

For minors under 14 years of age it is also possible to request the indication of the names of their parents, or legal representative, on the back of the document.
